Jigokudani is a national park in Nagano Prefecture. Jigokudani translates to "Hell's Valley" because of its harsh winter environment. There you can see the famous Japanese macaques in the natural hotsprings. The climb up to the hot springs is pretty long and icy (in winter) but worth it you like monkeys and high places.

Daio Farm in Nagano is the largest Wasabi farm in Japan and is well known for its waterwheels which were featured in Akira Kurosawa's Dreams. There are acres and acres of fields to explore behind the farm, but be careful not to get lost because I did once for about 4 hours. If you're up for it, you can also try the wasabi curry and wasabi beer.

Ishigaki is a small tropical island in the southernmost island chain of Okinawa. There are lots of beaches, mountains and beautiful sights to see, and is home to some of the friendliest people you will ever meet. Be sure to stop by the Nosoko area where there is a place called アミーゴ (Amigo). It's a taco shop run by my aunt from Mexico.

Okunoshima is an island in Hiroshima Prefecture. This island was used for a poison gas factory in WWII, but now it is just overrun with feral rabbits. You can buy rabbit food by the cup at the tourist shop, but in the less conspicuous building behind it you can buy a large bag for 500 yen. This way, all the rabbits will come to you and not the other tourists.
